Two Great Ideas

I was over at a friend’s house and I saw an episode of “Inspector America“.  One portion of the show dealt with the new straw that is being built into Lake Mead in Las Vegas.  I don’t know if you’re aware, but Lake Mead has lost more than 150 feet in the last ten or so years.  Las Vegas is running out of water.  Then, in a later segment, Host Timothy Galarnky visited the Edward C. Little Water Recycling Facility.  This facility is taking sewer waste and turning it into drinkable water.  Really.  Mr. Galarnky didn’t believe it himself, but he ran some tests and the water that came out the other end was safer to drink than the bottle water we purchase in the store.

Then, I was watching “In Wisconsin” on PBS and there was a segment about Barron County, WI.  They’re turning trash into energy.  First, the plant recycles what can be recycled.  Then, it uses magnets to remove the medal from trash.  Then, it burns the trash and turns that trash into energy.  The facility is called a Waste to Energy.  Whatever energy is not being used by the plant goes out onto the grid.  Think about that.  The people in Barron County pay less for energy because 25 years ago someone had the good sense to build a waste to energy plant.

So, here’s what I got from watching both of these shows, where we fail in this country is that we don’t see a good idea and expand on it.  If a politician wants to get MY vote in the next election, then she (or he) will support creating facilities like the Water Recycling and the waste to energy closer to my home.  We could use these ideas all over the country.  Why aren’t we doing more?

Oh, yeah, making these changes cost money and we’re out of money.  But, we’re finding money to finance two wars and we’re finding the ability to discuss tax breaks for the rich.  Granted these facilities aren’t going to pay for themselves overnight, but they are good investments in our future.

Ron Johnson BAD for Wisconsin

Just when I think that the right wing could not possibly say anything more stupid than I’ve all ready heard, one of them tops it all. Ron Johnson, the Republican candidate for Wisconsin Senator, said the following:  “”I absolutely do not believe in the science of man-caused climate change,” Johnson said. “It’s not proven by any stretch of the imagination.”

Johnson, in an interview last month, described believers in manmade causes of climate change as “crazy” and the theory as “lunacy.”

“It’s far more likely that it’s just sunspot activity or just something in the geologic eons of time,” he said.”  Read the entire article here.

What is this guy smoking?  The truth is that we haven’t caused global warming, but what we do to the environment affects the environment.  Nature did not ruin the ozone layer.  Nature hasn’t spilled millions of oil in our oceans.  Nature has dumped so much junk in our lakes and streams that our fish are loaded with mercury.

We’re slowly killing life on this planet – not just animal life – our life.  As George Carlin once said, “The earth is going to shake us off like a bad case of the fleas.”

Maybe, if I didn’t have my wonderful grandsons, I wouldn’t care about the environment.  I wouldn’t care if a obvious jerk like Ron Johnson got into office.  But, I do care.

I suggest that you read the whole article.  After reading Johnson’s extremist views, there is no way you could actually vote for him.

BPs altered photo distorts spill center activity – Road Runner

So, BP is blaming an unnamed staffer? Just some regular Joe who decided to alter the picture all on his own without any input from Management? We’re really supposed to believe that?

Global Warming

I get these email updates from a magazine called Newsmax.  Now, I signed up for it to get the “other” side’s version of the truth.  (I still say that for the most part, the only non-leaning magazine is US News & World Report.)  Anyway, I’m pretty sick of this updates.  They have extreme headlines, such as “Al Gore’s Lie”, and a lot of times all the updates do is tout some book I’m not interested in reading.  I don’t think Newsmax represents the right wing as a whole, just the radical right fringe.

Today’s headline was the aforementioned “Al Gore’s Lie”.  It is about how Global Warming doesn’t exist and isn’t a worry for any of us.

How can anyone on this planet not believe in Global Warming?

Global Warming is a naturally occurring event.  The earth has been warming up for thousands of years.  That being said, just because Global Warming occurs naturally, does not mean that it isn’t affected by what we do.  In fact, we’ve made it worst over the years.

I took a science class while in college and had a professor that would be classified as right wing.  He was very conservative in his views.  He assigned us what I thought at the time was the worst final paper ever.  We had to write and prove scientifically whether or not man caused Global Warming.

So, I did my research, which included an experiment on how the earth cools and warms, and I had to conclude that man did not cause Global Warming.

However; using the same experiment, I concluded that while man didn’t cause Global Warming, he’s certainly made it worst.

So, I really don’t understand what the fight is all about.

Don’t we want clean air to breath for ourselves and our children?

Don’t we want clean water to drink?

Don’t we want to invent products that do no harm to the planet?

How can anyone in their right mind argue with that?

Let’s just say, hypothetically, that Global Warming doesn’t exist.  What difference would it make?  Why wouldn’t we want to make the air cleaner and our water safer to drink?

It just stands to reason.

God Bless
